Since 2012, I’ve photographed thousands of incredible families and businesses across Austin and beyond. Whether I’m documenting snuggly newborns at home, capturing candid family chaos, or helping brands visually tell their story, my goal is always the same: to reflect the beauty, personality, and connection that already exists in your life or work.

Winter Newborn Photos in Austin: What to Know Before Baby Arrives
If your baby is due this winter, you are probably thinking about a hundred things right now. Newborn photos might be somewhere near the bottom of that list. I get it. But the families who book early are the ones who get the dates they want, so let’s put it on your radar now.
I’m Alissa, an Austin newborn and family photographer, and every newborn session I photograph happens in your home. Winter is one of my favorite seasons for it. Here is what to know if you’re due between December and February.

The short answer: before baby arrives. Ideally in your second trimester.
Newborn photos happen in the first few weeks of life, when babies are still sleepy and curled up. You can’t schedule that window months ahead, because no one knows exactly when your baby will decide to show up. So we plan around your due date and pick the exact session day once your little one is here.
Winter adds one more reason to book early. Babies due around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s land right in the middle of the busiest weeks of the year. If you reach out early, your spot is held and you have one less thing to figure out in those foggy first days home.

There is something about winter that suits newborn photos. Everyone is home. The house is cozy. Life slows down for a few weeks whether you planned it or not.
The light is different too. In winter the sun sits lower in the sky, so the light coming through your windows is softer and warmer. That is exactly what I look for. We’ll usually plan your session for late morning.
And because I come to you, there’s no packing a diaper bag, no car seat in the cold, and no figuring out where to nurse. Your baby is in their own space, surrounded by the things that will make these photos feel like your family. [See what a relaxed in-home newborn session looks like here.]

You don’t need a spotless house. I promise. Here is what actually helps:
The goal is your home on a slow, quiet winter morning. Real life, just a little tidier.

A winter baby often means a full house. Grandparents fly in. Big siblings are home on winter break. That can be a gift for your photos.
If family is in town for the holidays, let me know. A few frames of grandparents meeting the baby for the first time are some of the ones families treasure most. Siblings who are out of school are easier to schedule too.
Holiday decor is completely up to you. A tree in the background can be a sweet nod to the season, or we can keep it simple and timeless. Either way, I’ll work with your space as it is.

Winter babies arrive in the middle of a busy season, and the families who plan ahead get the most relaxed experience. If you’re due between December and February, now is a great time to reach out.

Winter newborn photo FAQsWhen should I book newborn photos if I'm due in winter?
In your second trimester if you can. Send me your due date and I'll hold your spot, then we pick the exact day once baby arrives.
How old should my baby be for newborn photos?
The first few weeks are ideal. Babies are still sleepy and curled up, and those early details change fast.
Do you have a studio?
No. Every newborn session I photograph happens in your home, so you don't have to go anywhere in those first weeks.
What if my baby comes early or late?
That's completely normal. We plan around your due date and set the session day after your little one is here.
Can big siblings and grandparents be in the photos?
Yes, please. Siblings meeting the baby and grandparents in town for the holidays are some of my favorite moments to photograph.
What if it's cold or rainy that day?
It doesn't matter. We're inside, using the light from your windows. Just turn the heat up a few degrees so baby stays warm and sleepy. If it’s incredibly dark, we will discuss a reschedule.
