Let’s be honest—an Austin family photoshoot with kids can feel like wrangling wild animals. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be stressful! Whether your kids are toddlers who run in every direction or teens who’d rather be anywhere else, we can make this fun (yes, really).
As your family photographer, I’ve seen it all, and I’ve learned a few tricks to keep those little ones (and big ones) happy, engaged, and even excited about getting their photos taken. Ready to make family photo day a breeze? Let’s go!
One thing I know for sure: kids don’t love standing still, and honestly, who can blame them? Instead of forcing stiff poses, we’ll keep things moving. I love to capture your family playing, laughing, and interacting naturally. Whether it’s running around Butler Park or skipping stones at McKinney Falls, we’ll have fun with it.
Think of the session as more of an adventure than a photoshoot. I’ll guide you through playful activities that keep the energy high and spirits even higher. The bonus? Kids forget they’re being photographed, and you end up with authentic, joyful moments.
Look, I’m not above a little bribery, and I bet you aren’t either! A small promise of ice cream after the session or a fun activity planned for later can work wonders to keep kids on board. A little incentive never hurt anyone.
Just make sure the “reward” is something exciting but low-pressure so they’re not stressing about it during the shoot. The goal is to keep the session relaxed and fun!
Tip: Try not to offer candy or treats during the photo session. We don’t want sticky fingers and chocolate around their mouth!
Comfort is key, especially for the little ones. Avoid stiff, formal outfits that make them uncomfortable. Austin is all about that laid-back vibe, so go for clothes that allow for movement and play. Think soft fabrics, stretchy materials, and layers (since Austin’s weather loves to change on a dime).
If you need help coordinating outfits, I’ve got a style guide packed with tips to keep everyone looking great without sacrificing comfort. Some of my favorite outfits for children come from Old Navy and Zara.
This is a big one: let your kids just be themselves. If your toddler is in a “spinning in circles” mood or your older kid just wants to hang out, we’ll roll with it. Some of the best photos come when kids are being their natural, quirky selves.
If they’re feeling silly, I’ll snap those goofy grins. If they’re shy, we’ll take our time and let them warm up. Whatever mood they’re in, we’ll capture those real, authentic moments that show who they are right now.
We will turn the whole session into a playful experience—think tickle fights, races, or swinging them through the air (all safe and fun, of course!). These are the moments that bring out the biggest smiles and the happiest memories.
Rigid poses and forced smiles? Let’s skip that. I’m all about keeping it candid. We’ll guide the session with a few natural cues, like “walk hand in hand” or “snuggle up,” but I’m mostly there to capture you interacting as a family.
Let the kids run around, laugh, and be themselves. The best moments come when everyone’s relaxed and in the moment, not when they’re trying to “look perfect.” Spoiler alert: those real-life moments are perfect. You don’t want to force a child to smile because that will just lead to a break down and then nobody will be happy.
As we plan your Austin family photoshoot, it’s my job to know when we should schedule your session and where. We know that Austin’s lighting can be magical, especially during the golden hour—the hour just after sunrise or before sunset. It’s also a great time because it’s usually cooler, and kids are often in a better mood at these times (post-nap or early morning excitement).
We’ll plan the session for a time that works best for your family’s schedule and your kids’ moods. Trust me, happy kids = amazing photos.
Here’s my last tip for you, parents: relax! Seriously, take a deep breath and let go of the pressure to make everything perfect. I’ve done countless family sessions in Austin, and I know that every family dynamic is different. The best photos happen when everyone is having fun and in the moment.
Your kids don’t have to sit still or smile for every shot. I’m here to capture your family’s unique story, quirks and all. The more fun you’re having, the more fun your kids will have, and that shines through in the photos.
Final Thoughts On Planning Your Austin Family Photoshoot: A family photoshoot in Austin with kids can be a blast when we take the pressure off and let the fun unfold. Whether we’re at one of Austin’s iconic parks or in the comfort of your home, I’m here to create an experience your kids will enjoy—and photos you’ll love forever.
