Since 2012, I’ve photographed thousands of incredible families and businesses across Austin and beyond. Whether I’m documenting snuggly newborns at home, capturing candid family chaos, or helping brands visually tell their story, my goal is always the same: to reflect the beauty, personality, and connection that already exists in your life or work.

When you picture maternity photos, you might imagine quiet portraits of an expectant mother, hands resting on her growing belly. Those moments are lovely on their own. Adding your partner changes the energy. It becomes more about connection and the season you’re experiencing together.
As an Austin photographer specializing in maternity photos, I’ve seen how much the connection shifts when both parents step in front of the camera. It’s no longer just about anticipation. It becomes about partnership, support, and the shared excitement of becoming a family.
Including your partner doesn’t mean stiff, formal poses. It’s about capturing what’s already there: the way you make each other laugh, the small gestures that say “we’re in this together,” and the love that fills the space before your baby arrives.
In this post, I’ll share what changes when a partner joins a maternity session. I’ll explain how I help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera. I’ll also show why these photos often become some of the most meaningful images from this season.

When your partner joins the session, the photos move beyond individual anticipation and into shared storytelling. You’ll notice small gestures that come naturally: the glance, the hand reaching over, the quick laugh that happens without thinking. These moments show real connection without ever feeling forced.
In couples maternity photography, those small, in-between interactions create images that feel grounded and real. They show quiet teamwork, gentle reassurance, and the affection that already exists between you. The focus shifts from documenting pregnancy alone to celebrating the partnership behind it. That connection will soon grow into a family.
Most people worry about looking stiff in front of the camera. Gentle direction makes all the difference. During lifestyle maternity sessions, I guide couples with simple actions instead of strict poses.
Walk together. Hold hands. Whisper something that makes you both laugh. Rest your head on their shoulder for a moment.
These easy prompts bring your attention back to each other rather than the camera. Once you start interacting naturally, genuine emotion takes over. That is when the most meaningful images appear.
Once couples stop thinking about posing, that’s when the real magic happens. The focus shifts to connection, and the photos start to feel like you.

Some of my favorite photos happen between prompts, when a partner reaches out to steady you, or when you both start laughing at something that wasn’t planned. These moments don’t need direction. They already exist in your connection. It might be the quick squeeze of a hand, a shared glance before a laugh, or a quiet pause where everything slows for a second.
I love documenting these quiet gestures because they show the heart of your relationship in a way that posed images can’t. They remind you what this time actually felt like. The small exchanges. The easy comfort. The way love shows up in ordinary moments. When you look back, those details often become the ones that matter most.
It’s completely normal to feel hesitant. Many expectant parents worry about feeling awkward or unsure of what to do. Once the session begins, that nervousness fades quickly.
Including your partner isn’t about perfect posing. It’s about capturing your shared experience. I’ve photographed many camera-shy couples who ended up having fun once they relaxed and focused on each other. The result is a set of photos that feels natural, connected, and genuinely you.

One of my favorite maternity photo ideas came from a couple who both described themselves as “terrible at photos.” Within minutes, they were joking, holding hands, and forgetting I was even there.
Their gallery ended up full of contrast: tender moments mixed with playful ones. It reflected who they were together. Loving. A little silly. Completely ready for the next chapter. That balance is what I love most about maternity photos with partners. They tell a fuller, truer story.

Maternity photos are about more than documenting pregnancy. They are about connection, anticipation, and love in many forms. Including your partner widens that story and brings in the relationship that will anchor your growing family.
If you’re planning maternity photos with your partner in Austin, I’d love to help you create a session that feels relaxed, real, and true to who you are.
