Since 2012, I’ve photographed thousands of incredible families and businesses across Austin and beyond. Whether I’m documenting snuggly newborns at home, capturing candid family chaos, or helping brands visually tell their story, my goal is always the same: to reflect the beauty, personality, and connection that already exists in your life or work.

Welcoming a new baby into your family brings a lot of joy and a lot of logistics. Between feedings, diaper changes, and adjusting to life with less sleep, adding a newborn photo session to your calendar might feel overwhelming. One of the most common questions I hear from new parents is about newborn photo session length: How long will this actually take?
The short answer: plan for about an hour to an hour and a half. That might sound quick, but newborn sessions are designed to be flexible. Babies run the show, and we go completely at their pace. My role is to make sure we capture those honest moments of connection without anyone feeling rushed.
In this post, I’ll walk you through what affects newborn session length, how I keep things calm when plans shift, and what you can expect from start to finish.
Most newborn sessions last around 90 minutes. That window gives us plenty of space for feeding, diaper changes, and all the little pauses your baby might need along the way. Sometimes we finish sooner if your baby settles right in, and other times we take a bit longer if they need extra comfort or a second feed.
Either way, the focus isn’t on the clock. It’s on creating an easy rhythm that keeps everyone relaxed and your baby comfortable, because that’s when the most natural images happen.
Several factors can influence how long a newborn photoshoot takes, and most of them come down to the rhythms of your baby’s day:
Rather than push through, I let your baby set the pace. That might mean slowing down for extra cuddles, swaddling for comfort, or shifting focus to capture a quiet in-between moment. This flexibility is exactly what makes lifestyle newborn photography so natural. We’re documenting your family as you are, not trying to fit into a rigid schedule.
I once photographed a newborn who was extra sleepy and a bit fussy. Instead of rushing, we slowed the pace and let the day unfold naturally. The parents took time to feed and soothe, and I offered to step in with a little swaddle magic to help ease their baby past that overtired stage. We paused, adjusted, and gave the baby space to reset.
The session stretched closer to two hours, but because no one felt pressured, the atmosphere stayed calm. By the end, their little one was content, and we were able to capture a mix of quiet, restful moments and bright, wide-eyed expressions. For me, that’s always the priority: creating a peaceful experience that feels supportive for parents and results in a gallery you’ll feel good about.
If your baby needs a break, that’s completely normal. I often use those pauses to capture candid in-between moments, like a quiet snuggle, a hand resting on a tiny head, a sibling peeking in, or the way a parent’s shoulders finally drop as they exhale. These small details often become client favorites.
Other times, I simply step back and give you space. There’s no rush, no pressure, and no expectation to “perform.” Feeding, changing, or just holding your baby close are all part of the story, and those real moments are just as beautiful as the posed ones.
If you’re worried about “taking too much time,” let me reassure you: there’s no such thing. After 13 years of photographing babies and families, I’ve truly seen it all, from sessions that flow quickly to ones with plenty of pauses for feeding, soothing, or just catching your breath.
Every baby has their own rhythm, and that’s exactly what we follow. Sessions move at your baby’s pace, not mine, and I make sure the process stays calm, flexible, and supportive throughout. My role is to take care of the details, guide gently when needed, and give you space to simply be with your baby. That way, you can relax, knowing the time we spend together will still lead to the images you’ve been hoping for.
So, how long does a newborn session really take? Plan for about 90 minutes, but know we’ll stay flexible. The length of time isn’t what matters most; it’s the connection and story we’re able to capture during that window.
If you’re in Austin and looking for lifestyle newborn photography, I’d love to help you plan a session that feels easy, relaxed, and true to your family.
